Serena Ryder’s The Art of Falling Apart
A Stop Motion Short
This short film is a collaboration between Serena Ryder and See You On The Moon. Written and narrated by Serena, she explains her struggle with mental wellness. Her words move us through an abstract world where colour and shape imagine her experiences. Emotional highs, lows and plateaus are portrayed in a conceptual style to make room for introspection within her story, as mental health affects us all in our respective ways.
Making The Video
The process of making this video differed from our usual experience. Isolated due to the pandemic, we had to sort out how to best collaborate from a distance. Typically, we hole up in our studio until we get sick of each other. This time, we spent many hours on the phone, storyboarded on a collaborative site, passed off materials back and forth to build the sets from home (with cats who love to sit on top of paper), shot from a makeshift home studio (which posed a serious lack of space issue), and did the bulk of our editing by sending cuts & feedback then more cuts & feedback then more more more.
We’re very happy with the result and learned a lot about how to work in a different way, but if we had the choice we’d rather have seen each other’s faces and made a pile of dumb jokes while we cut a million shapes out of paper together.
Here is a collection of behind the scenes shots.
